How I Found Myself Here

“I dwell in Possibility.”

Emily Dickinson

I’m a serial entrepreneur.  I’ve done a thing or two in our northern Michigan community, and for a time my instinct was to go big.  A bigger project must mean a bigger impact.  Reach as many as possible, solve the whole problem, be everything for everyone.  Eventually I learned that big is only better when it comes to the dream.  The HOW can be small.

I was learning this lesson at the very same time that I came to a crossroads in our little town of Scottville.  Literally: I was on a run and had to stop at the (only) stoplight at State Street and Main Street where I noticed the old People’s State Bank building on the corner was for sale.  I found myself wondering, “Could I make the kind of big impact I’ve been reaching for in a whole new way?”

There’s a smallness here in Scottville that frustrates some.  Not me.  I love Scottville as it is.  A tiny town like Scottville has a clear view of where we’ve been, and that helps us remember where we want to go.  The outlook at the crossroads reminds us to look for potential in unlikely places.

When I discovered that historic building for sale on the corner, I saw only possibilities.  I did it again- I dreamed big.  I grabbed the hands of family, friends, and partners and took them on the wild renovation rollercoaster ride as we invested our time and talents in this long-term plan.

But the bigness is temporary and serves a simple design: a space where we can share ourselves one moment at a time with people planted here or just blowing through.  Where we can grow into the best version of who we are in that moment.

However we find ourselves, however we used to be or should be or could be, we can make the most of this moment in Scottville, together.  Find yourself here.  I’ll make the coffee.

See you soon.
